For a family trip to Chicago, you’re looking for a hotel that offers a good balance of location, comfort, and amenities like breakfast, all within a midrange budget. Here's a breakdown of the options you listed, along with some recommendations for other options that may also suit your needs.

1. Residence Inn Chicago Downtown/River North

This is a great choice for families, especially if you're staying for a few days. The Residence Inn offers spacious suites, which is ideal for families needing extra room. It's also a full-service hotel with free breakfast, an indoor pool, and a kitchen in each suite, allowing for flexibility if you want to cook. The location in the River North area is fantastic—just a short walk to the Magnificent Mile, the Chicago Riverwalk, and plenty of restaurants. River North is known for its vibrant nightlife, so it might get a bit busy in the evenings, but it's a very central location.

  • Location: River North (close to Magnificent Mile, great for walking to key attractions)
  • Family-Friendly: Spacious suites, breakfast included, and a pool
  • Nearby Attractions: Navy Pier, Millennium Park, Museum of Contemporary Art

2. Hampton Inn Chicago Downtown/Magnificent Mile

The Hampton Inn is a solid midrange option. It offers free breakfast, a fitness center, and is well-located on the Magnificent Mile. The rooms are more basic compared to some of the other options, but it’s a reliable chain with a reputation for quality service. The location puts you right in the heart of Chicago’s shopping district, which means you’ll be close to all the action. It’s a very pedestrian-friendly area, and there are many family-friendly dining options nearby. The downside is that it doesn’t offer as many amenities as some of the other hotels on this list, but it’s a good value for the price.

  • Location: Magnificent Mile (great for shopping, dining, and exploring)
  • Family-Friendly: Free breakfast and comfortable rooms
  • Nearby Attractions: The John Hancock Center, Navy Pier, and Chicago Water Tower

3. InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile

The InterContinental is a luxurious hotel that provides a more upscale experience while still being in a midrange price range, especially with breakfast included. The hotel itself is housed in a historic building and offers stunning views of Lake Michigan or the city skyline. It’s a larger hotel with more amenities, including an indoor pool, a fitness center, and multiple dining options. The location is also great, right on the Magnificent Mile, making it easy to explore the city. The InterContinental is a bit more refined compared to some other options and might be the best choice if you want to treat your family to a more upscale stay without breaking the bank.

  • Location: Magnificent Mile (great central location with lots to do)
  • Family-Friendly: Upscale with luxury amenities, pool, and stunning views
  • Nearby Attractions: The Magnificent Mile, Lake Michigan, Navy Pier

4. Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Chicago Downtown/Magnificent Mile

The Fairfield Inn is another solid option that’s very family-friendly. The rooms are spacious, and the hotel offers a complimentary breakfast. It’s a little more budget-conscious than the InterContinental or Residence Inn but still offers great value. The hotel is located just off the Magnificent Mile, so you’re very close to major shopping, dining, and attractions. It’s a good option if you’re looking for something comfortable and affordable while still being close to all the key areas in Chicago.

  • Location: Magnificent Mile (close to shopping, dining, and public transport)
  • Family-Friendly: Free breakfast and large rooms, good for families
  • Nearby Attractions: Navy Pier, Millennium Park, Riverwalk

Other Suggestions:

  • The Langham Chicago: If you’re willing to stretch the budget a bit, The Langham offers incredible views, an indoor pool, and exceptional service. Located near the River North area, it’s a bit more upscale but well worth considering for a family.
  • Hyatt Centric Chicago Magnificent Mile: A stylish, modern hotel with great views, located on the Magnificent Mile. It’s another excellent midrange option with free breakfast and spacious rooms.
  • DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Chicago – Magnificent Mile: Known for its warm cookie welcome and solid amenities, this hotel is a good choice with a central location, offering family-friendly features at a reasonable price.

Conclusion: Based on your preferences for location, family-friendly amenities, and breakfast included, all of these hotels are great options. However, if you're looking for more space and a suite for your family, the Residence Inn Chicago Downtown/River North would be a top pick. For those looking for a blend of luxury and location, the InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile stands out with its upscale experience. If budget is a bigger concern, the Hampton Inn Chicago Downtown/Magnificent Mile and Fairfield Inn & Suites are solid choices that offer great value and proximity to everything.
