Useful apps for holiday in China this week
Hi. We have downloaded Alipay, WeChat and Didi for our holiday starting this week. Are there any more apps we should download that will be useful for our time in China.
Didi - it’s also showing - ride hailing in China
Do I need this particular Didi ?
Thanks
Hi,
For a smooth holiday in China, you’ve already downloaded some essential apps like Alipay, WeChat, and Didi. These cover most of your payment and transport needs. However, there are a few additional apps and tips that can make your trip easier and more enjoyable:
- Didi Chuxing: Yes, you need the main Didi app for ride-hailing within China. It allows you to call taxis, private cars, and ride-sharing services. Make sure you have your phone number verified and linked to WeChat or Alipay for payments.
- Maps/Navigation: Download either Baidu Maps or Gaode (Amap). Google Maps is partially blocked in China and often inaccurate. Baidu Maps has English versions and is widely used for local directions and public transport routes.
- Translation: Google Translate works in China, but for offline use, download the offline language packs. Alternatively, Pleco is a highly recommended Chinese dictionary and translation app.
- Train & Flight Tickets: For booking trains, China Railway 12306 app is official, but it may require registration with a Chinese phone number. Trip.com is a convenient alternative for booking trains and flights in English.
- Food & Reviews: Dianping is similar to Yelp and very useful for finding restaurants, cafes, and attractions. It shows user reviews, prices, and directions.
- VPN (Optional): Some websites and apps, like Gmail, Google Maps (full features), and certain international news sites, are blocked in China. A VPN can help, but it must be installed before entering China.
Other Tips:
- Ensure your apps are updated before arrival, as some require Chinese phone number verification that is difficult to set up once in China.
- Have WeChat Pay or Alipay properly linked to your bank card, as cash is rarely used in big cities.
- Download offline maps or translate packs for areas with limited internet coverage.
In summary, Didi, Baidu Maps or Amap, translation apps, Dianping, and Trip.com will complement your Alipay and WeChat setup and cover most needs during your stay in China.
