Dolphin Swims

Good morning! We are taking a family vacation in a few weeks with kids, 6 yr old and 2 yr old. Wondering if there is a place to do an interactive swim with the dolphins (age appropriate) that is not Gulf World? Or even reviews on Gulf World? Is it as bad as the articles/reviews?

Thank you!

Panama City Beach offers a few options for dolphin experiences that can be suitable for young children, although options outside of Gulf World are limited directly in the area. Gulf World is the most well-known facility, but there are a few alternatives nearby or within a short drive.

Gulf World Marine Park: This park offers interactive dolphin swims for various age groups. For very young children, there are programs where kids can touch and interact with the dolphins safely without full swims. General reviews are mixed:

  • Many families report positive experiences, noting that the dolphins are well-cared-for and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly.
  • Some reviews and articles criticize the park for ethical concerns regarding keeping marine animals in captivity, and there are occasional complaints about facilities being dated or crowded.
  • Overall, for small children, the touch-and-feed programs or shallow water interactions tend to be appropriate and enjoyable, even if full swims are not recommended for a 2-year-old.

Alternative Experiences Nearby: If you are open to a short drive outside Panama City Beach, consider these options:

  • St. Andrews State Park: While no formal dolphin swims, guided eco-tours and dolphin-spotting boat tours are family-friendly and provide safe ways for young children to see dolphins in the wild.
  • Shell Island Tours: Private boat charters offer dolphin encounters along with snorkeling and beach activities. These are non-captive experiences and may be better suited for families with very young kids.
  • Destin or Fort Walton Beach Marine Experiences: About 1–1.5 hours away, some facilities offer shallow-water dolphin encounters similar to Gulf World, often marketed as more interactive and with smaller groups.

Tips for families with small children:

  • Check age and height requirements carefully; some programs restrict full swims to children 6 years or older.
  • Consider early morning sessions when dolphins are most active and crowds are smaller.
  • For the 2-year-old, stick to touch-and-feed programs or gentle boat tours rather than full swim programs.

In summary, Gulf World remains the main option in Panama City Beach for dolphin interactions, but for a more ethical or natural encounter, boat tours for dolphin watching or excursions to nearby parks offer enjoyable alternatives for families with young children.
