Would 2nd week of September be a good time to visit? Will the wildlife still be active?
Less crowds?
Have never been, we are 68 and 72 in good health able to do moderate hikes for several hours at a time
Thanks for any insights
The second week of September can be an excellent time to visit Yosemite National Park. By this time, summer crowds have started to thin, particularly compared to July and early August, which means you'll generally find less congestion at popular trailheads, viewpoints, and parking areas.
Weather during mid-September is usually mild, with daytime temperatures in Yosemite Valley ranging from the mid-70s to low 80s °F (24–28°C), and cooler mornings and evenings. Tioga Road and higher elevations may start to experience cooler temperatures, especially in the morning.
Regarding wildlife, many animals are still active at this time. Deer, black bears (though less so in heavily trafficked areas), squirrels, and birds are commonly seen. Bears will still be foraging, and early autumn is a good time to observe wildlife preparing for winter, but always follow safety guidelines and food storage rules.
Hiking in September is generally pleasant, with moderate temperatures and less risk of summer heat. Waterfalls may be lower than in spring, but scenic vistas remain stunning. As first-time visitors in good health, moderate hikes for several hours should be comfortable, especially in the valley. Trails such as Mirror Lake, Sentinel Dome, and Lower Yosemite Fall are manageable and rewarding.
Tips:
Overall, mid-September strikes a good balance of fewer crowds, pleasant hiking conditions, and active wildlife, making it a suitable time for first-time visitors who want to enjoy Yosemite at a moderate pace.
