Hawaiian quilt?
Hello, we need to replace our bed and have bought a wooden Amish made one. I’m considering buying a Hawaiian hand made quilt as the top layer of linens as I think that would really complement this nice piece of furniture. I know it will be expensive, but I love to support local crafters and artists, so would probably buy a full/queen size to top the bed, rather than try to buy a floor length one. I’ve seen them on Etsy, made in Honolulu, but I wonder if anyone knows of a Maui quilt artist or store that I could support and maybe even visit when we come in October? Thanks for any info.
Aloha! Hawaiian quilts are a beautiful way to showcase local artistry and would indeed complement a handmade Amish bed wonderfully. Maui has a few artisans and shops where you can find authentic hand-stitched quilts, and visiting in person can make the experience even more special.
Some suggestions for finding Hawaiian quilts on Maui:
- Maui Quilt Shop & Classes (Kahului): They carry locally made quilts and often feature work from Maui-based quilt artists. You may also inquire about custom orders or meet local quilters during your visit.
- Upcountry Maui quilt studios: Many quilters live in areas like Makawao or Pukalani. Some offer studio visits or accept appointments to view their work, especially for larger quilts like full/queen sizes.
- Makawao Art Market: While primarily for visual arts, some vendors feature hand-stitched quilts and textile crafts. Great way to support local artists directly.
- Hawaiian Quilt Guild of Maui: They often have members who sell or take commissions for custom quilts. Reaching out to them ahead of time can help you connect with artists willing to create something special for your new bed.
- Etsy and Online Maui Artisans: While you mentioned Etsy, searching specifically for “Maui Hawaiian quilt” can yield quilts made on the island, giving you the chance to support local artists while possibly arranging pickup or studio visits.
Tips for purchasing:
- Decide on size and whether you prefer traditional motifs (like hibiscus, breadfruit, or palmetto) or a custom design to complement your bed.
- Inquire about fabric and batting used to ensure quality and durability.
- If possible, visit the artist’s studio to see the stitching up close and learn about the story behind the quilt—it adds to the charm and value.
Visiting Maui in October should give you the opportunity to meet quilters in Upcountry towns like Makawao, Paia, and Kula. Many are happy to show their work and even take custom commissions, making it a meaningful and personal souvenir as well as a beautiful bed covering.
