Maui in December

First time visiting and planning 10 days split between Maui and Kauai. I have read to stay south in Kauai - is there a side of Maui that would be preferable this time of year?? TIA

December in Hawaii generally brings slightly cooler temperatures and more rain than the summer months, and Maui’s weather patterns vary depending on which side of the island you choose. The island’s north and east sides (including Paia, Haiku, and Hana) tend to be wetter due to trade winds and more lush, tropical landscapes. The west and south sides (including Lahaina, Kaanapali, Wailea, and Kihei) are drier, sunnier, and better suited for beach and snorkeling activities during this time of year.

For a first-time visit in December, staying on the drier, sunnier side of Maui is generally recommended to maximize outdoor activities and beach time.

  • West Maui (Lahaina, Kaanapali, Napili, Kapalua): This area has lots of resorts, restaurants, and beaches, with generally pleasant, dry weather in December. Excellent for snorkeling, whale watching (late December to April), and exploring nearby attractions.
  • South Maui (Kihei, Wailea, Makena): Also drier and sunny, with beautiful beaches and good snorkeling. Wailea has luxury resorts and a more relaxed vibe, while Kihei is more casual and budget-friendly.
  • North and East Maui (Paia, Haiku, Hana): Lush and tropical but wetter, especially in December. This area is great if you want to experience waterfalls, rainforests, and the Road to Hana, but it may be less ideal for beach lounging or consistent sunny weather.

In summary, for a December trip focused on beaches, snorkeling, and sunny weather, the West Maui or South Maui areas are your best bets. You can still plan a day trip along the Road to Hana for waterfalls and rainforest scenery if you want to experience the wetter, tropical side.
