Access to the north shore
It's been many years since my last visit to Kauai. Tunnels beach is one of my favorite spots on the north shore. I know that years ago, they closed access past Hanalei. Has this been reopened back to the previous normal? Is there anything special I need to do to get to Tunnels? TIA
Tunnels Beach, located on Kauai’s North Shore, remains one of the most popular snorkeling and diving spots on the island. Access to this area has seen changes over the years, especially after storms and flooding impacted the road past Hanalei.
Current access information as of recent updates:
- The road past Hanalei to Tunnels Beach is generally open to the public. However, conditions can change due to maintenance, storm damage, or local regulations, so it’s always a good idea to check current road conditions before heading out.
- Parking at Tunnels Beach is limited and mostly along the roadside. Be mindful of local residents’ driveways and avoid blocking access.
- There are no special permits required to access the beach itself, but always follow posted rules and respect private property signs near the access points.
Tips for visiting Tunnels Beach:
- Arrive early, especially on weekends or holidays, as parking fills up quickly.
- Check surf and weather conditions, particularly if you plan to snorkel or dive, as waves can be strong depending on the season.
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen and be cautious of sharp rocks and coral when entering the water.
- Carry water and snacks, as there are no facilities at the beach.
In summary, access to Tunnels Beach is largely restored to its usual state, but it’s wise to check local updates before your visit and plan for limited parking and basic beach conditions.
