Transit Without Visa (TWOV) process at airport

Hi

Am getting confused regards what to do on arrival at Beijing airport to use the Transit Without Visa (TWOV). Some mention has been made of fingerprinting etc, we will be coming in from Japan. Please could someone talk me though it in very simple terms…. I know we are ok regarding our stay time. Many thanks

Here’s a clear step-by-step explanation of the Transit Without Visa (TWOV) process when arriving at Beijing Capital International Airport, assuming you are eligible and coming from Japan:

1. Arrival at Beijing Airport:

  • Once you disembark from your flight, follow the signs for “International Transit” or “Entry/Exit” for TWOV passengers.
  • Do not go to the regular visa/immigration counters, as there is a separate lane for transit without visa travelers.

2. Immigration Document Check:

  • At the TWOV counter, present your passport, onward flight ticket to a third country (your next destination), and any other requested travel documents.
  • Staff will verify that your nationality is eligible for TWOV and that your stay falls within the 240-hour limit.

3. Fingerprinting and Biometric Procedures:

  • All travelers using TWOV will need to provide fingerprints and possibly have their photo taken at the counter. This is standard procedure.
  • Follow the instructions given by immigration officers carefully; it is a quick process and usually takes only a few minutes.

4. Temporary Entry Permit:

  • After verification, the officer will stamp your passport with a TWOV entry permit, showing your allowed stay duration and area of travel.
  • This stamp serves as your permission to enter China under the TWOV policy.

5. Collect Luggage / Transit to Domestic Travel:

  • If you need to transfer to a domestic flight (e.g., Beijing → Shanghai), you may need to collect your checked luggage and go through domestic check-in procedures.
  • Follow airport signage for domestic departures or ask airport staff for guidance.

6. Tips for Smooth Transit:

  • Have all documents ready: passport, onward flight ticket, hotel bookings (if requested).
  • Arrive with enough time for any transfer procedures—2–3 hours is usually sufficient if you are continuing on domestic flights.
  • Follow airport signs and staff instructions; they are familiar with TWOV procedures and can guide you.

In short: get in the TWOV line, present documents, provide fingerprints, receive your temporary entry stamp, then continue to baggage claim and onward travel. It’s straightforward once you know which lane to use and have all documents ready.
