Layover in Beijing worth it?

Trying to figure out my flights and I see I can book a reward out of Chongqing in business to Beijing where I arrive in Beijing in the early afternoon at PKX and then depart the next morning around 8am from PEK. This would get me down to Singapore with some daylight left and the longer flight is SQ business so it will be somewhat comfortable at least.

My questions is this worth it and is it even viable? What neighborhoods should I look to overnight in? I'd like to visit Temple of Heaven, Tiananmen Square and have a peking duck dinner. I've been to Beijing before so i have seen most of the main attractions already. Heck I've seen the square before but thought it would be cool to go back and see it. How far in advance do I need to be to PEK for an international business flight?

Having a layover in Beijing that spans an early afternoon arrival at PKX (Beijing Daxing International Airport) and an early morning departure from PEK (Beijing Capital International Airport) is technically feasible, but it requires careful planning. It is a tight window, especially since the airports are on opposite sides of the city and Beijing traffic can be unpredictable.

Considerations for the layover:

  • Airport transfer: PKX is approximately 45–60 km south of the city center, while PEK is about 25 km northeast. Depending on traffic, transferring between the two airports can take 1–1.5 hours. You may need to use a taxi, Daxing Expressway shuttle, or private car service.
  • Time available: Arriving early afternoon and departing the next morning gives you roughly 12–15 hours in the city, minus airport transfers, hotel check-in/out, and security. This allows for a short evening exploration but not an extensive sightseeing itinerary.
  • Security and check-in: For an international business flight from PEK, arrive at least 2–3 hours before departure. Factor this into your morning schedule to avoid rushing.

Suggested neighborhoods for an overnight stay:

  • Dongcheng District: Close to the Temple of Heaven, Tiananmen Square, and Wangfujing. Convenient for a short sightseeing trip and evening activities.
  • Jingshan/Beihai area: Slightly more scenic and close to traditional hutongs; good if you prefer a quieter stay but still central.
  • Chaoyang District: More modern area with upscale hotels, suitable if you prefer business hotel comfort and easier access to major roads for airport transfer.

Activities you could realistically fit in:

  • Temple of Heaven: Evening visits are limited, so an afternoon walk through the surrounding park can be pleasant.
  • Tiananmen Square: Open 24 hours; a quick visit in the late afternoon or evening is possible.
  • Peking Duck dinner: Book a restaurant close to your hotel in advance. Quanjude or Da Dong are famous options.

Additional tips:

  • Traffic can be heavy, especially during rush hours (morning 7–9am, evening 5–7pm). Plan airport transfer and sightseeing accordingly.
  • Travel light if possible to save time on check-in and hotel transfer.
  • Consider using a private driver or airport transfer service for efficiency, particularly when moving from PKX to the hotel and then to PEK.

In summary, the layover can be worth it for a short evening experience in Beijing, revisiting a few landmarks, and enjoying a nice dinner. However, it is a tight schedule, and careful planning for airport transfers, hotel location, and timing is essential to make the visit comfortable and stress-free.
