Hana in November

We (myself, two teens) will be in Maui over thanksgiving and doing RTH Thanksgiving Day and staying the night at the Hyatt that night. I was considering going a day early to space out the stops we'd be making but now a bit hesitant b/c i read Hana isn't great in the wintertime. Is even one night too many?

Visiting Hana in November can be a wonderful experience, but there are some seasonal factors to keep in mind. November is part of Maui’s wetter season, particularly on the east side of the island where Hana is located. Rainfall is more frequent, and roads may be slick or partially closed due to weather conditions.

That said, even one night in Hana is not necessarily “too many” if your goal is to experience the scenic drive and the area’s unique attractions without feeling rushed. Many travelers choose to spend a night to fully enjoy the sights along the Road to Hana (RTH) and explore local waterfalls, beaches, and parks.

Considerations for visiting Hana in November:

  • Road conditions: The Road to Hana can be wet and slippery in winter months. Drive carefully and allow extra time for stops. Some minor landslides or closures are possible, so check current road conditions before your trip.
  • Weather: Rain is more likely, particularly in the afternoon. Mornings are often drier, so starting early is advantageous.
  • Crowds: Thanksgiving week is busy, so an overnight stay helps you pace the drive and enjoy sights without rushing.
  • Activities: You can still visit waterfalls, black sand beaches, and hiking spots, but some hiking trails may be muddy or slippery. Swimming in waterfalls can be riskier due to higher water flow.

Tips for a winter visit:

  • Start early to maximize daylight and potentially drier conditions.
  • Pack rain gear and waterproof shoes.
  • Check the forecast and road alerts before departing.
  • Consider spending the night to split the drive into two relaxed days, which also allows more flexibility in case of weather delays.

In summary, one night in Hana in November is reasonable and can make your trip more enjoyable by reducing the pressure of doing the entire Road to Hana round trip in a single day. Just be prepared for rain and slower driving conditions, and you should have a memorable experience.
