Construction after the storm

I've been visiting AMI for over 20 years, almost once a year.. We want to come down this September - October but I don't want to rent a home next to homes under construction from the last 2 hurricanes. We were actually evacuated last year while there. Is there a resource to find where construction sites are on the island..

It’s understandable that you’d want to avoid staying next to construction sites, especially after the storms last year. While there isn't a centralized, official online resource specifically listing ongoing construction projects on Anna Maria Island (AMI), there are a few ways to check and get more information to ensure you have a peaceful stay.

  • Contact Rental Agencies or Property Managers: Most rental agencies and property managers on AMI are aware of any nearby construction and can advise you on properties that are in quieter areas. They can tell you if there are any active construction zones nearby and help you avoid them. Reach out to local agencies such as Anna Maria Island Accommodations, Island Real Estate, or Mike Norman Realty to inquire specifically about construction around your desired location.
  • Check with Local Government or Building Permits Office: The City of Anna Maria or the Manatee County building permits office might have information on ongoing construction projects. They may not publish this info online in a consumer-friendly format, but you can contact them directly or visit their websites to inquire about permits or major construction taking place on the island.
  • Local Facebook Groups & Forums: There are a number of local Facebook groups and forums dedicated to AMI residents and visitors, such as Anna Maria Island Community or Anna Maria Island Rentals. These groups are often the best resource for up-to-date, crowd-sourced information about what’s happening around the island, including construction activities. Locals may have insights on which areas are currently under construction.
  • Stay Away from Areas Most Impacted by Recent Storms: If you're familiar with the island, certain areas closer to the beach or along the main roads (like Gulf Drive) may have had more damage and reconstruction from recent hurricanes. The southern end of the island near Bradenton Beach, and parts of Holmes Beach, may be seeing more active reconstruction due to storm damage. You might want to focus on quieter areas like Anna Maria city (north end) or areas that were less affected.

By reaching out to local agencies, staying active in local groups, and using the right contacts, you should be able to avoid renting a home next to ongoing construction. It’s always best to ask the property owner or manager directly about any potential issues and ensure you're getting the quiet, peaceful stay you're looking for. Enjoy your visit to AMI!
