How to enter the forbidden city with online tickets booking?

Hi all,

I have just made a confirmed tickets booking for the Forbidden City through their official The Palace Museum website. But no receipt or QR Code has been issued. So, on the day at the gate do I just show them the email confirmation or passport only ? Is that all ?

Thanks.

If you have booked a ticket for the Forbidden City through the official Palace Museum website, the entry procedure is quite straightforward, but there are a few important points to note.

Firstly, the official system does not always issue a separate receipt or QR code immediately after booking. What you need to do on the day of your visit is to bring the following:

  • Your passport – this is required for entry and identity verification.
  • The email confirmation of your booking – even if there is no QR code, the staff at the ticket office or entry gate can verify your reservation using your passport details.

Steps at the gate:

  • Go to the designated entrance for online ticket holders (these are usually clearly marked).
  • Show your passport to the staff for verification.
  • Present the booking confirmation email if asked. Some staff may only check your passport details, as the online booking is linked to your passport number.
  • Once verified, you will be issued a physical ticket or allowed to enter directly, depending on the system that day.

Additional tips:

  • Arrive early, especially during peak tourist seasons, as entry queues can be long.
  • Check the Palace Museum website or app for any special instructions or temporary closures.
  • Make sure your passport is valid and matches the name used for the booking; otherwise, you may face entry issues.

In summary, bringing your passport and the booking confirmation email is sufficient for entry. There is no need to worry if a QR code was not issued, as the system uses your passport for verification.
