Itinerary first timers

2 adults (58) looking at flying in/out from Kona (cheapest) have rental car. Monday Oct 20 at 2:30 pm arrival and leaving Monday Oct 27 and flight is 9:50 pm. Want to see beaches, snorkel, volcano, hikes etc.

thinking arrive and drive fast route to Hilo and stay 2/3 nights? Than Kona 4/5 nights. I’m considering paying an extra night for Kona since flight out is late. Last day relax at Airbnb

Ideas?

For first-time visitors to the Big Island with a week in Hawaii, your proposed itinerary is a solid starting point. Flying in and out of Kona is convenient and often cheaper, and having a rental car gives you the flexibility to explore both the Hilo and Kona sides of the island.

Your plan to drive to Hilo first is a good way to maximize your time near Volcanoes National Park and the lush east side. Staying 2–3 nights in Hilo allows you to:

  • Visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, including the Crater Rim Drive, Thurston Lava Tube, and if conditions allow, viewing lava flows or steam vents.
  • Explore waterfalls such as Akaka Falls and Rainbow Falls.
  • Take short hikes in the rainforest or along coastal trails.
  • Experience Hilo’s local charm, farmers’ markets, and botanical gardens.

After Hilo, heading to Kona for 4–5 nights is ideal for beach time, snorkeling, and west-side attractions. Highlights to consider:

  • Snorkeling at spots like Kealakekua Bay, Honaunau (Two Step), or Kahalu’u Beach Park.
  • Relaxing on Kona’s beaches or enjoying water activities such as paddleboarding or kayaking.
  • Visiting coffee farms and local markets in Kona and nearby towns.
  • Optional day trips to Pololu Valley Lookout or Waipi’o Valley, depending on energy and interest.

Regarding your flight timing, paying for an extra night in Kona makes sense. It gives you:

  • A stress-free last day to relax at your Airbnb or explore local shops and cafes.
  • Flexibility in case you want a final swim, sunset, or casual sightseeing without rushing to the airport.

Additional tips:

  • Plan your Hilo to Kona drive along the Saddle Road for a quicker route and unique scenic views.
  • Book any popular activities (snorkel tours, Volcanoes NP guided hikes) in advance, especially in October.
  • Check sunrise and sunset times at Volcanoes NP if you want to catch dramatic lighting for photography.

Overall, your plan balances exploration, adventure, and relaxation well. Staying a few nights on each side of the island and adding an extra night before your flight will make for a comfortable and memorable first visit.
