Kauai in February

We will be in Kauai 2/19-26. We usually visit Sept-Nov and spend most days at various beaches. Looking for suggestions on the best beaches in February, and knowing weather may not permit as much beach time any suggestions on activities would be super appreciated 😀 We are staying in Princeville but like to travel all over the island.

February on Kauai can bring a mix of weather—expect some rain, especially on the north and east shores, but also beautiful sunny breaks. Ocean conditions can be rougher on the north shore, so swimming may be limited in some areas. Since you’re staying in Princeville, you’re well-positioned to explore the north and east coasts, but renting a car will allow you to see the entire island.

Best Beaches for February:

  • Poipu Beach (South Shore) – Generally calm waters year-round, great for swimming, snorkeling, and spotting turtles. Protected by an offshore reef, ideal for families or safe snorkeling.
  • Hanalei Bay (North Shore) – Gorgeous views with a long sandy beach. Swimming is possible, but waves can be large in winter months, so exercise caution.
  • Tunnels Beach / Makua Beach (North Shore) – Excellent snorkeling when the ocean is calm. Check surf conditions first as winter waves can be strong.
  • Lydgate Beach Park (East Shore, near Wailua) – Protected swimming areas, good for snorkeling, and easily accessible for a half-day trip.

Alternative Activities if Beach Time is Limited:

  • Hiking: Kauai has incredible trails. Consider the Kalalau Trail (first 2 miles to Hanakapi’ai Beach), Waimea Canyon hikes, or the Okolehao Trail near Wailua for panoramic views.
  • Waterfalls & Scenic Drives: Visit Wailua Falls, Opaekaa Falls, and drive the scenic north shore for lookout points and photo stops.
  • Boat / Helicopter Tours: Winter months provide dramatic surf and lush landscapes. Helicopter tours showcase the Napali Coast’s cliffs and hidden waterfalls, while boat tours offer sea caves and coastal views.
  • Cultural Sites: Explore Kauai’s history with visits to Kilohana Plantation, Kauai Museum in Lihue, or local farmers’ markets.
  • Kayaking: Wailua River offers guided kayak trips to waterfalls, perfect for active exploration when beaches are less inviting.

Tips for February Travel:

  • Check surf and weather conditions daily, especially on the north shore, for safety.
  • Mix north and south shore activities to take advantage of calmer conditions on each side of the island.
  • Plan indoor or semi-indoor options (museums, plantations, cultural centers) as backup in case of rain.

Overall, February can be a wonderful time to enjoy Kauai’s lush landscapes, waterfalls, and hiking trails, even if beach time is slightly limited. Balancing beach visits with scenic drives and cultural activities will make for a rich and memorable week.
