Played several times years ago when it was relatively inexpensive and always had a good time. I have read the review and they are not good .
And yes it surely is more expensive than it used to be ( like everything) but still want to take my son in law when we visit over new years .
Is it really as bad as many say in the reviews on this forum. Would be interested in any locals who play that can comment on the corrupt experience . Thanks
Key West Golf Club has definitely changed over the years, and you’re right — recent reviews are mixed. Some players feel it hasn’t kept up with the higher pricing, while others still enjoy it for what it is: a laid-back, tropical, Key West–style golf experience rather than a polished, resort-level course. Below is a detailed breakdown to help you decide whether it’s still worth a round with your son-in-law over New Year’s.
Overall Course Condition (Recent Impressions)
Many visitors report that conditions vary widely depending on the season, the amount of rain, and how much maintenance has been done recently. Fairways and greens can be patchy at times, but not unplayable. The layout itself hasn’t changed — still tight, still lined with mangroves, and still very “island golf.”
Locals who play frequently tend to say it’s not a terrible course, but it’s nowhere near pristine. If you’re expecting a PGA-quality course, you’ll be disappointed. If you’re going for a casual round in a tropical environment, expectations make all the difference.
Pricing Versus Value
Prices have risen noticeably, especially during winter high season. This is the number one complaint in reviews — not necessarily the course itself, but the fact that the cost doesn’t match the condition.
That said, winter is peak demand in Key West, and almost every activity is more expensive during that time. Locals often suggest trying for a twilight round if the schedule allows, as the rate and crowds are both more forgiving.

Local Perspective — What People Who Live in the Keys Say
Residents who golf say the course is absolutely playable and still enjoyable if you approach it as a casual outing rather than a luxury experience. Many locals acknowledge the same issues reviewers point out, but also note that it’s the only regulation course within 50+ miles, so expectations should be realistic.
They also point out that holiday weeks bring heavy traffic on the tee sheet, which contributes to slower rounds and more wear on the course.
Tips to Improve Your Experience
Bottom Line
No, the course is not “as bad as the worst reviews make it sound.” It’s also not the bargain or condition level it was years ago. What it is is a fun, playable, tropical, Key West-flavored course that many people still enjoy — as long as they understand what they’re getting.
If your goal is to share a relaxed holiday round with your son-in-law, reminisce about past visits, and enjoy the novelty of golfing in the Keys, it’s still a perfectly good choice. Just set expectations for conditions a bit lower than before, and the experience should still feel worthwhile.
