MARTA Train After Falcons Game - Five Points or Garnett?

hello,

my husband and son will be using the MARTA train to get to the airport following a Falcons game.

I see there is a station right outside the station, but they'd rather walk to Five Points or Garnett to avoid switching trains for the Red/Yellow line with goes to the airport.

Are both stations fine in terms of safety and an ok area to walk? Any preference? Suggestions?

Thank you!

For getting to the airport after a Falcons game using MARTA, both Five Points and Garnett stations are viable options, but there are a few considerations when it comes to safety and ease of access.

Five Points Station: Five Points is the more central and bustling station of the two. It’s located in the heart of downtown Atlanta and is a major hub where multiple MARTA lines (Red, Yellow, Blue, and Green) intersect. After a Falcons game, you’ll find a lot of people walking around, especially in the evening, so it feels relatively safe due to the higher traffic. The walk from the stadium to Five Points is fairly short—about a 5 to 10-minute walk.

  • Pros:
    • Convenient access to MARTA’s Red and Yellow lines, which go directly to the airport.
    • High foot traffic and open area, which typically feels safer with more people around.
    • Close proximity to various restaurants and shops if you need any last-minute items.
  • Cons:
    • Can be a bit busy, especially during peak hours like after a game, with large crowds.
    • It’s a busy transit hub, so there may be some homeless individuals or panhandlers around, though not necessarily a big concern during daytime or early evening.

Garnett Station: Garnett is another option, but it’s a bit farther from the stadium—about a 10 to 15-minute walk. While it’s also on the Red and Yellow lines (going toward the airport), the area around Garnett feels less busy compared to Five Points, and there are fewer amenities in the immediate vicinity. The walk from the stadium to Garnett takes you through a less commercial area, which might feel quieter and less populated at night.

  • Pros:
    • Less crowded, which may appeal to those who want a quieter experience after the game.
    • The walk itself is fairly straightforward, although it’s a little farther compared to Five Points.
  • Cons:
    • The surrounding area around Garnett is more industrial and doesn’t have the same amount of foot traffic, which could feel less safe, especially later at night.
    • While it’s still a relatively short walk, you’ll be passing through less pedestrian-friendly areas.

Safety and Suggestions: Both stations are safe to walk to, but Five Points has the advantage of being in a busier, more active area, especially after a large event like a Falcons game. Garnett might feel a bit more isolated, especially at night. However, in general, the areas around both stations are not known for being dangerous, but as with any city, it's always a good idea to stay alert, particularly after dark. If you're looking for a faster route with less walking, Five Points would be your best option. It's close to the stadium and has more amenities around it. However, if you prefer a quieter, less crowded experience, Garnett might be a good choice, but be mindful of the slightly longer walk and less populated area.

Overall, I’d suggest walking to Five Points after the game, as it’s both convenient and safe, especially with the high foot traffic in the area. If you're concerned about safety or if you're leaving very late at night, taking a MARTA train from Five Points is also very easy, and you won’t have to worry about walking through a quieter, industrial area.
