Everglades side trip
Heading to KW from Melbourne, FL in April.
Has anyone done a side trip to the Everglades on the way? Is it doable in one day?
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
Doing a side trip to the Everglades while traveling from Melbourne, FL to Key West in April is definitely possible, but it requires careful planning. The distance from Melbourne to the main Everglades visitor areas (like Shark Valley or the Gulf Coast entrance near Everglades City) is roughly 3–4 hours of driving, depending on the route, and then another 5–6 hours to reach Key West. This means a full Everglades visit would add significant driving time to your day.
Options for a one-day side trip:
- Shark Valley Visitor Center: Located in the northern Everglades near Miami, this area is accessible for a shorter visit. You can do the 15-mile tram loop to see alligators, birds, and other wildlife. Guided tram tours take about 2 hours, and there are bike rentals if you prefer a self-guided trip.
- Everglades City / Gulf Coast Entrance: This is farther south and more scenic, with opportunities for airboat tours and wildlife viewing. It’s more remote, so visiting this area will require leaving early and may feel rushed if trying to reach Key West the same day.
- Airboat Tours near Florida City or Homestead: Located just before entering the Everglades National Park, these tours are shorter (1–2 hours) and can give a taste of the Everglades without a full-day detour. It’s convenient if you want to break up the drive toward the Keys.
Practical tips:
- Start early in the morning to maximize daylight, especially if you plan to drive to Key West afterward.
- Consider limiting your Everglades visit to a single location or short airboat tour rather than trying to see multiple areas.
- Pack water, sunscreen, and insect repellent, as April can be sunny and warm with occasional mosquitoes.
- If you want a more relaxed experience without rushing, it may be better to plan an overnight near the Everglades or in Miami and continue to Key West the next day.
In summary, a side trip to the Everglades from Melbourne to Key West is doable in one day if you focus on a single area, such as Shark Valley or a short airboat tour near Florida City, but it will make for a long and tightly scheduled day. Planning ahead and choosing a specific destination in the Everglades will make the experience more enjoyable.
