A guide to Qinghai's hidden gems! 9 exciting destinations!

Preface

The three-day college entrance examination is about to end

The annual summer travel time is not far away

I saw that someone in my circle of friends had already left.

The most frequent occurrences are in Xinjiang and Northwest China.

When the background music of "Zebra Zebra" and "Painting Heart" sounded

I knew it! We’ve arrived in Qinghai!

Of China's ten points of beauty, seven points are in the northwest.

Plateaus, deserts, Gobi, basins, lakes, snow-capped mountains, and various other landforms, this place condenses the essence of our beautiful China. No wonder people say that they must go to this "wilderness of life" in this lifetime!

When it comes to Qinghai, many people think of the rippling blue waters of Qinghai Lake, the "Sky Realm" of Chaka Salt Lake, and driving an off-road vehicle on National Highway 315 and taking videos of Chengjia... In fact, in this vast land, there are still many treasures waiting for our exploration🔍

Qinghai Lake

Chaka Salt Lake

If you are visiting Northwest China for the first time, you can take a tour of the Gansu-Qinghai Loop Line first.

As our flagship route, it has been optimized and upgraded numerous times! Feel free to charge ahead!

Comprehensive and in-depth! Visit all the must-see spots 👇🏻

✅Wander between the plateau pearls of Qinghai Lake, Chaka Salt Lake and Emerald Lake

✅Walk along Mingsha Mountain and Zhangye Colorful Danxia, and watch the sunset

✅ Embark on the Silk Road and encounter Mogao Grottoes, Jiayuguan and Yangguan

🔻Route recommendation:

🔹【Northwest Legend·Classic】

🔹【Northwest Legend·In-depth】

If this is not your first time in Qinghai and you want to try something different, or if you don’t want to squeeze in with the crowds and bump into other people at the same check-in spots, you can take a look at those lesser-known sights that haven’t been discovered yet!

Little-known but breathtakingly beautiful, quickly join Xiaoxia to experience the unique Northwest style and ultimate vitality~

Is Chaka too crowded? Qarhan Salt Lake!

[A skyscape more spectacular than Chaka]

☁️The water reflects the sky and the sky connects to the earth. People walking in the lake feel like they are swimming in a painting.

Chaka Salt Lake is incredibly beautiful, but its view is highly influenced by the weather! On cloudy days, the water isn't as clear as on sunny days, and the reflections aren't as impressive. Want to see a stunning salt lake? We have other options!

🌟We went to the Qarhan Salt Lake to see the feast of colors

💚It’s a different color from Chaka Salt Lake, like the green apple juice spilled by God~

📆June to August is when the lake is at its brightest!

@lei

This largest salt lake in China, hidden deep in the Qinghai Province, is about 40 times larger than the Chaka Salt Lake! With such a large area, there's less crowding in a small area!

The 32-kilometer-long "Ten Thousand Meter Salt Bridge" across the salt lake is perfect for shooting legendary road movies!

❄️The salt pans stretch as far as the eye can see, and the salt flowers by the lake are of various shapes, resembling corals and mushrooms, sparkling and translucent under the sunlight. A drone perspective offers a stunning panoramic view, and our team leader will provide filming services throughout the trip, stunning your social media posts~

🌟Some travel tips:

🔸Be sure to wear sun protection, hat and sunglasses;

🔸No need to wear shoe covers, but be sure to pay attention to safety when walking to avoid falling into salt pits or slipping;

🔸Lake water is corrosive, so be sure to rinse immediately after contact with water!

🔻Route recommendation:

👉🏻【Car Travel·Exploring Qinghai】

🔸Unlock a dazzling visual feast! Witness towering mountains, shimmering lakes, and vast grasslands. Each vehicle is equipped with a drone and camera, and the tour leader will film the entire trip. Each guest will receive 10 carefully edited photos. For tourists who want to see the stunning scenery and create stunning photos, don't miss this itinerary!

Tired of the Qilian Mountains? Head to the depths of Hala Lake!

A hidden lake deep in the Qilian Mountains

👀Qilian Mountain can only be viewed from a distance while sitting in a car? Who said that?

🏔In the uninhabited area in the heart of the Qilian Mountains, there is a high mountain saltwater lake nurtured by glaciers - Hala Lake, which is also the second largest lake in Qinghai.

🏔️ Due to its remoteness and lack of signal, this area is known as China's fifth-largest uninhabited area. It retains its pristine natural beauty, with a crystal-blue lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains. The scenery is truly breathtaking! According to the product manager, some tourists have been moved to tears by the sight of this snow-capped lake and mountains. 😭 (That's the true charm of nature!)

Pikas and marmots can be seen everywhere along the way. If you are lucky, you may even see Tibetan antelopes and wild yaks foraging and playing by the lake.

🛺 If you're driving the Tianjun County-Delingha City loop, the back roads and craters are a bit unfriendly for city-dwellers! Even looking at satellite maps and driving through "no-man's land" can easily make you feel uneasy!

✅So, why not join us? We'll take a hardcore off-road vehicle. With a comfortable vehicle, skilled drivers, and a team of capable drivers who can handle any emergency, you can fully enjoy the scenery along the way. After all, the road also has its "most beautiful scenery"~

☕When you arrive at your destination, not only will your tour leader help you set up the camera, so you can easily take great photos of your life; you can also place tables and chairs in the scenery, make tea and enjoy it, and fully experience the tranquility and purity of nature.

🔻Route Recommendation

👉🏻【Off-road faction·B-side Qinghai】

🔸Off the beaten path, explore in-depth! We'll explore hidden gems rarely visited by caravans—Chaka South Bank, Hala Lake, the Yadan Desert, and the uninhabited area of the Altun Mountains! Avoid the crowds and commercialized attractions to truly experience the pure charm of Qinghai. This three-passenger, three-car off-road adventure offers a balance of wild excitement and comfort.

There are not only water yardangs, but also many yardang landforms!

【Mars-like Landscape】【Secret Garden Deep in the Earth】

📍Obo Liang Yadan

Come to Qinghai to see the Yadans, there are more than just water Yadans here!

🌟The massive and well-proportioned Yadans of Eboliang appear particularly mysterious amidst the vast Gobi Desert. Being among them feels like traveling to the surface of Mars.

@Wu Dan

Especially at sunrise or sunset, the golden sunlight shines on the Yadan group, forming a strong contrast between light and shadow, giving people a dreamlike feeling. It is very suitable for photography enthusiasts to collect materials and enrich their photo library!

@Xiao Che

📍Underground Yadan

🌟This is a recently discovered Yadan landform group, not many people know about it🤭~

There are not only Yadan landforms, but also Danxia, deserts, canyons, wetlands and other stunning scenery.

The colorful Yadan is bright and clear in layers, so you can easily take photos of the atmosphere of the no-man's land. There is also a signal on the top of the mountain (so you don't get lost)

🔻Route Recommendation

👉🏻【Off-road·Mangya Secret Realm】

🔸Drive off-road into the rocky Devil City, visit a Martian camp, and snap some sci-fi travel photos! Each group will be equipped with a drone! How can you not capture such stunning scenery?

👉🏻【Extreme Scenery·Mangya+Khekexili Photography】

🔸We'll stay in a tented camp and photograph sunrises, sunsets, and star trails. Our schedule will be based on moon phases to avoid moonlight pollution, allowing photographers to capture as much as they can!

Looking for some romance? Choose Koruk & Tosu Lake!

The Romantic Legend of Lover's Lake

👩‍❤️‍👨The freshwater lake Koruk Lake and the saltwater lake Tosu Lake are connected by the Bayin River and are called "Lover's Lakes". The water here is super blue!

🏞️ They're so close, but the difference is huge! Koruk Lake has rivers flowing in and out, but Tosu Lake only has water flowing in, not out, resulting in a magical phenomenon of one salty and one fresh! (This appears to be a geography question, haha)

💙 According to legend, these two lakes were formed by a pair of lovers who died for love, staying together and relying on each other~ (secretly crying for the tragic love of others😭)

Tuosu Lake @lei

On one side is the clear lake, with swaying reeds and playful water birds beside the lake, full of vitality; on the other side of the lake shore is surrounded by vast Yardang landforms and Gobi deserts. The romance of the Northwest is hidden in the whispers of the lake and the Gobi!

Want to see mountains and rivers? Head to Kanbula National Forest Park!

[A paradise on earth with Danxia and clear water]

🌲 "A paradise on earth, with clear waters and red mountains, Kambula"

Located at the intersection of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Loess Plateau, here you can encounter the mirror-like clear Yellow River!

Kanbula National Forest Park is really a niche place. Even Xiaomoushu couldn't find any sharing posts. There are few tourists, but the scenic area is very large. It takes at least one day to visit it.

🔸Crossing the Lijiaxia Reservoir, you can see the red mountains on both sides of the river like burning clouds;

🔸Go to Lingshan Holy Water and see many eagles circling around the strange mountains and rocks

🔸Climb up Lamaogang and take a bird's-eye view of the entire lake and mountains, unlocking the drone's perspective directly;

🔸Hike to Xiaoyaochi and reach the commanding heights to enjoy the 360° view of the red mountains and clear waters.

Red rocks, clear water, prayer flags, sea of clouds. If you want to avoid the crowds at popular internet celebrity check-in spots, you must come here to see the primitive vitality!

⚠️ It takes about half an hour to drive to the highest observation deck in the scenic area, but it will take longer if you transfer to the scenic area's arranged transportation. The Likan Road within the scenic area is quite winding, and the most dangerous part can only barely accommodate a small car. It is a test of driving skills, so everyone should drive according to their ability!

Try something exciting! Come to Kunlun Grand Canyon!

[A magnificent chapter written by the power of nature]

🤩National Geographic didn't lie! The most stunning Antelope Canyon isn't in the US! It's in Qinghai! It's undeveloped, with no entrance fee and no commercialization. Just the pristine traces of the Earth's crustal movement.

🚙 Heading south along National Highway 219, you'll see Gobi Desert and snow-capped mountains all the way. Then, you'll turn onto a gravel road. It's a 15km washboard road, so keep your foot on the gas! Once you see the red iron bridge, your destination isn't far away. It's less than a 2km hike into the canyon.

Towering peaks rise on both sides of the Kunlun Grand Canyon, steep cliffs look as if split by a giant's axe. A river rushes endlessly at the bottom of the canyon, its roar deafening and reverberating throughout the valley.

Head upstream along the riverbed into the "One Line Sky" canyon. Sunlight shines through the 50-meter-high cliffs, creating golden beams of light. You can also see the shale texture surging like waves. The stream at the bottom of the valley is cool (cold), and you can even take off your shoes and swim upstream.

🌟Warm reminder: Remember to wear waterproof hiking shoes and spare tights! The river water is meltwater from the snow and is very cold, so be sure to keep warm.

The moon is right under your feet? Set off for Heidushan!

[Entering an uninhabited place to see ink paintings]

👀After seeing all the colorful attractions, want to see something different?

Then head to Heidu Mountain! This secret spot, which has only recently become popular, boasts unique black yardangs. The hills, both large and small, are covered in black sand and gravel, resembling the surface of the moon, earning it the nickname "The Moon on Earth."

@lei

Far away from the hustle and bustle of the city, there are no traces of human or animal life here. It retains its original and rough nature, and you can feel the power of loneliness and tranquility.

📢Reminder: While enjoying the scenery, please also be mindful of protecting the local ecosystem and avoid damaging this mysterious and pristine land!

@Northward

I want both the sightseeing and the cultural experience! The holy land of Gar Monastery!

【Go to the ancient temple on the cliff to touch the sky】

🔮It takes about 2 hours from Nangqian to the Gar Monastery, which is located on a cliff at an altitude of 3,700 meters, facing the Grand Canyon and surrounded by snow-capped mountains. It seems like a shining pearl inlaid in the mountains. The hundreds of buildings of the Gar Monastery are irregularly distributed on the hillside.

Humanities lover?

👉🏻 Tourists who appreciate culture shouldn't miss this largest monastery of the White Sect! With nearly 1,000 years of history, the monastery still maintains a very traditional rhythm of life and religion. The sound of chanting can be heard echoing through the secluded valley. The temple's treasures in the main hall are a pair of prayer wheels—Han Dharma wheels that rotate day and night. Legend has it that they were part of Princess Wencheng's dowry when she entered Tibet.

Birdwatching enthusiast?

👉🏻At Gar Monastery, you can often see birds of prey gliding through the canyon, offering great vantage points for overhead shots! You can also spot a variety of forest birds, though it's up to the tourists to discover what they are. Besides birds, the mountains are also home to a wealth of wildlife, including blue sheep, musk deer, and pikas.

⚠️Because of the special geographical location (pay attention to the mountains) and rich biological resources (a large number of birds), aerial photography requires caution. If you are not careful, the drone may be attacked by a bird of prey.

On the way to Gar Monastery, you can also see alpine meadows, ancient salt ponds, canyon forests and forest streams. Your eyes are simply not enough to see them all!

🔻Route Recommendation

👉🏻【Off-road·Nangqian Secret Realm】

🔸This exceptional itinerary takes you deep into Nangqian, Yushu, the southern gateway to Qinghai! Make a pilgrimage to two sacred Tibetan mountains, Amnye Machen and Nagama. Retrace Princess Wencheng's journey into Tibet, exploring relics and breathtaking scenery along the way. Enjoy an off-road trip through the Three Rivers Source, visiting diverse monasteries!

9 niche destinations to see the B side of Qinghai!
