Abashiri 2024: The Drift Ice Ship Aurora You Must Ride

Traveling to Abashiri in Hokkaido, I was especially looking forward to boarding the icebreaker Aurora. Although the weather was clear and sunny that day, I only saw thin ice near the shore instead of the thick drift ice I had imagined, missing out on the spectacular scene I had envisioned.
The moment I saw the Aurora, I couldn't help but anticipate its journey through the icy waters. Drift ice originates from the northern coast of the Sea of Okhotsk, constantly changing due to the influence of wind and ocean currents. This mysterious phenomenon is what makes it so intriguing to explore.
Even though the drift ice was not as impressive as expected, we were still able to enjoy the magnificent view of the Sea of Okhotsk from the ship. The intertwining blues of the sea and sky were truly refreshing. In the distance, the undulating mountains of the Shiretoko Peninsula painted a stunning natural landscape. Such scenery, even without the accompaniment of drift ice, still showcased the grandeur of nature.
As time passed, the moment of sunset gradually arrived. The golden glow of the setting sun reflected on the sea, creating shimmering waves that seemed to drape the world in a golden veil. This breathtaking beauty made me forget the disappointment of the drift ice and left me longing to return to this land to experience the thrill of cutting through ice once again.
