Abashiri Prison: A Fascinating Experience

While there are buses available from Memanbetsu Airport to the vicinity of Abashiri Prison, considering the rest of your itinerary, renting a car might be a more practical option.

The admission fee is 1,500 yen for adults, but I found it well worth the price as I could thoroughly explore the fascinating prison and its vast grounds, leaving me highly satisfied.

There were materials about the famous escapee Shiratori-san, and records of annual inmate numbers and escapees. To my surprise, the data showed a relatively high frequency of successful escapes! (Haha)

The unique design of the prison, with its central hub and radiating arms like an octopus, was truly intriguing. I'm glad I got to see it in person at least once.

You can also try the "prison meal" at the cafeteria. I regret not taking the opportunity to try it during my visit. 😢

I visited during Golden Week, but the interior was extremely cold, so even during warmer seasons, be prepared for chilly conditions. ⚠️
