Byeongsan Seowon Linked Course: The Peaceful Harmony of Confucianism and the Nakdong River
After exploring Andong Hahoe Village, if you have time, we recommend a linked course to the nearby Byeongsan Seowon. Byeongsan Seowon, a Confucian academy dedicated to Yu Seong-ryong, is a representative Confucian cultural heritage site in Korea and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Located about 15-20 minutes from Hahoe Village, it's easily accessible. Upon entering, you'll be overwhelmed by its beautiful and refined architecture. The Mandaeru Pavilion, in particular, is the crown jewel of Byeongsan Seowon. Sitting in the pavilion, you can gaze out at the breathtaking views of the Nakdong River and Byeongsan Mountain across the river, truly embodying the harmony with nature that Confucian scholars sought.
Byeongsan Seowon, with its surrounding Nakdong River and lush pine forests, creates a breathtaking landscape painting, offering a distinctly different atmosphere from the warmth of Hahoe Village, offering the refined elegance and peace of a scholar. I sat at Mandeoru and gazed out at the river for a long time, my mind naturally calming and immersed in the tranquil atmosphere. Around the Seowon, the well-maintained Confucian Culture Trail Course 2 (Hahoe Village Trail) is ideal for a leisurely stroll. While Hahoe Village showcases traditional Korean village life, Byeongsan Seowon perfectly embodies the Confucian spirit and architectural aesthetics of the Joseon Dynasty. Exploring these two places together is essential for understanding the cultural and historical depth of Andong, and is well worth a full day.
