A Day Like a Time Traveler: Exploring Key Historic Houses and Strolling Through the Village
Andong Hahoe Village isn't just a tourist attraction; it's a living museum where residents actually live. Buying a ticket at the village entrance and boarding the shuttle bus feels like stepping back in time to the Joseon Dynasty. The first way to truly experience Hahoe Village is to take a leisurely stroll around its key historic houses. Particularly striking is the juxtaposition of the thatched-roof houses of the common people and the magnificent tile-roofed houses of the noble class. Representative historic houses include Yangjindang, the largest in the village, and Chunghyodang, believed to have been the first house built by Ryu Jong-hye, the village's founder. These houses have been designated as national treasures and important folklore materials, demonstrating their high historical value.
I walked along the magnificent sarangchae (men's quarters) of the nobleman's house and the simple yet charming walls of the thatched-roof houses, imagining life in the past. The mud walls, stone walls, and wooden fences in each alley create a tranquil atmosphere and make for excellent photo opportunities. It takes about two hours to walk around the entire village, but for a more comfortable journey, renting an electric car at the village entrance is a great option. Also, don't miss the Nakdong Riverside walk along the Mansongjeong Pine Forest Trail at the edge of the village. The scenery of the green pine trees and the river is a tranquil scene, and it's easy to understand why this place is considered a prime location. Hahoe Village is a place where the "aesthetics of slowness" truly comes alive, where you can take your time, savoring the old charm of each alleyway.
