Aosta is the capital city of the Aosta Valley, an autonomous, bilingual region in the Italian Alps near the borders of Switzerland and France. Known as "the Rome of the Alps," the city was founded by the Roman Empire and still retains many ancient ruins. Aosta is a major hub for tourism and a gateway to the region's abundant natural and outdoor sports attractions.
Aosta is situated at the confluence of the Dora Baltea river and the Buthier stream.
It lies in a flat basin surrounded by the tall peaks of the Alps, including the Grand Combin, Mont Vélan, and Mont Emilius.
