This Hokkaido Sapporo + Asahikawa itinerary is perfect for those who want a relaxing trip while experiencing local culture and nature! Sapporo's city center boasts a blend of greenery and romantic European architecture, from the fairytale-like atmosphere of Shiroi Koibito Park to the metropolitan nightscape of Sapporo TV Tower. In Asahikawa, the Asahiyama Zoo offers an unexpected treat! Each attraction has its own unique charm, and the itinerary fits neatly into the itinerary, perfect for those who don't want to rush around.
Sapporo's three must-see destinations: fairytales, parks, and nightscapes.
Shiroi Koibito Park is a paradise for sweet lovers! The exterior captivates you the moment you step off the train. The European-style castle, gardens, and handmade cookie workshop are all perfect for a romantic photo op. You can even make your own Shiroi Koibito cookies while enjoying the aroma of chocolate and experiencing Hokkaido craftsmanship. Located in Miyanosawa, Nishi-ku, it's easily accessible and opens daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM (last admission at 4:30 PM). Arrive early to enjoy some souvenirs.
Sapporo TV Tower is a must-see landmark! Located next to Odori Park, this tower boasts massive floor-to-ceiling windows offering a 360-degree panoramic view of Sapporo. The views are completely different day and night, and we highly recommend visiting before dusk to watch the sunset paint the sky ablaze. Located in Odori Nishi 1-chome, Chuo Ward, it offers flexible hours (generally from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM) and closes at 9:50 PM. Tickets are 43 yuan, making it a great value.
Asahiyama Zoo in Asahikawa City: Close-up animal interactions are incredibly fun.
Entering Asahiyama Zoo is like entering another world! The animals are cleverly designed to play around, and star animals like polar bears and penguins are given public feedings and performances. The penguin walks in winter are truly captivating. Furthermore, the zoo offers a truly captivating experience, unlike the traditional zoo experience of simply watching animals in captivity. It's located in Higashi-Asahikawa-cho, Asahikawa City. Hours vary slightly depending on the season, but visitors can visit until after 5:00 PM. It's recommended to check availability beforehand. Admission is 48 yuan.
Tips and Experiences:
1. Shiroi Koibito Park is crowded in the afternoon, so we recommend visiting in the morning. DIY spots are limited, so register early.
2. Sapporo TV Tower is especially popular at dusk. If you want to take great photos, consider lining up half an hour early. Good weather will give you the best views.
3. Asahikawa Zoo is large, so plan your visit at least 2-3 hours. During busy seasons (like the Penguin Walk), check the official website for schedules.
4. There's a bus stop right outside Asahikawa Zoo, making it convenient, but the bus schedule is limited. It's recommended to plan your visit carefully to avoid missing the return trip.
Food Recommendations
Sapporo's must-try soup curry and miso ramen. There's a shop outside the zoo where you can buy Hokkaido milk ice cream and handmade hot dogs. The local ice cream is incredibly creamy and highly recommended.
Transportation Tips
Sapporo to Asahikawa is accessible by JR train, which takes about 1.5 hours. Sapporo's subway system is well-developed, making it convenient to both attractions. Asahikawa Zoo is accessible by direct bus from Asahikawa Station.
Useful Tip: You can reserve tickets for each attraction online in advance. Don't buy tickets at the doorstep during peak season or holidays; lines can be long!
