Mount Aso is a volcano located in the Kyushu region. It is a large volcano that is still active and continues to erupt. The grasslands on top of the mountain remain lush and beautiful. If you visit Fukuoka and are unsure where to go, and if you have a JR Pass, Mount Aso is a great option to consider, even though it requires multiple transfers.
Traveling there: If you have a JR Pass, take the Shinkansen to Kumamoto, then transfer to a train to Aso Station. The journey takes about 2 hours, but you should check the schedule on the website as there are both direct routes and routes that require a transfer at Ozu Station. Once you arrive at the train station, buy a round-trip bus ticket to the volcano for about 1500 yen. The bus ride takes around 30-40 minutes to reach the base of the mountain. You can either walk up or take a minibus, which takes about 5-10 minutes. We chose to take the minibus up and walked down on the way back.
