Aso Shrine, an ancient shrine with a history of more than 2,500 years, is known as one of the three major gates in Japan. However, it collapsed and was completely destroyed in the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake. Fortunately, it has now been restored.
The shrine enshrines Kenwa Ryumei, the founder of Aso, and twelve other gods. On the horizontal approach running parallel to the shrine, a wooden sword with a dragon pattern carved on it is enshrined at the gate. It is said that if you pass through the gate, Kenwa Ryumei's incarnation of a dragon will cut off all disasters.
If you don't have a car, you can take bus No. 2 from Aso Station, which takes about 20 minutes. The nearest JR station is Miyaji, and Aso City Hall is also nearby.
When you take the Aso Volcano Tour Bus Day Tour, you will also be arranged to visit the Aso Shrine to experience it. This is the head shrine of the 500 Aso Shrines in Japan. It has been integrated with the volcanic religion that worships the crater of Mount Aso since ancient times and is revered as the first shrine in Higo Province.
