Bibi-Heybat Mosque, located near Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.
Built during the Shirvan dynasty in the 13th century, it is said to have housed the tomb of a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, the founder of Islam.
It has long been a cherished place of worship for Muslims, but
it was completely destroyed when Azerbaijan came under Soviet rule. It remained in ruins for a long time until Azerbaijan's independence and its reconstruction in 1994.
The saint enshrined within the tomb is said to bring great blessings, and Muslims from neighboring countries make pilgrimages to the mosque.
The interior of the mosque is not particularly large, but
it was quite spectacular, enveloped in gold and vibrant green.
There appear to be regular guided tours (probably only in the local language).
At the entrance, there were free rentals of abayas, the traditional Muslim garment similar to a gown, available for Muslim women, but they didn't seem to be very strict, and no foreigners were wearing them.
