Khao Sok National Park, Thailand

Khao Sok National Park is one of the most stunning places not only in Thailand but perhaps in all of Southeast Asia. Often referred to as the "jewel" of southern Thailand, it is a destination that captivates visitors with its natural beauty.

This is not just a park but an ancient tropical rainforest that is older and more diverse than the Amazon. Here, you will find impressive limestone karsts towering over the jungle, mysterious caves, waterfalls, and most notably, the vast and incredibly beautiful Cheow Lan Lake.

What is Khao Sok?

Khao Sok National Park is a massive reserve in Surat Thani province, famous for its ancient tropical rainforest, which is over 160 million years old. The main attractions are divided into two parts:

1. The main park area: jungles, rivers, caves, and waterfalls near the park entrance.
2. Cheow Lan Lake: An artificial lake created in 1982 after the construction of the Ratchaprapha Dam. Its emerald waters surrounded by sheer limestone cliffs are the hallmark of Khao Sok.

How to get to Khao Sok

Khao Sok is located roughly halfway between the popular resorts of Phuket, Krabi, and the islands of Samui/Phangan, making it a convenient stop for visitors.

From Phuket:

· By minivan: The most popular option. The trip takes about 2.5-3 hours. Regular departures are available from Phuket Airport and the bus terminal. Cost: ~250-400 THB.
· By taxi/transfer: More comfortable but more expensive. The trip costs 2500-3500 THB. You can book through your hotel or apps like Grab/Bolt.
· By bus: Buses from Phuket's bus terminal to Surat Thani can drop you off at the turnoff to Khao Sok. From there, you will need to take a songthaew (local pickup truck taxi) to the park.

From Krabi/Ao Nang:

· By minivan or taxi: The trip takes about 2-2.5 hours.
· By bus: Similar to the option from Phuket.

From the islands of Samui, Phangan, Tao:

1. Ferry + transfer: Take a ferry to the pier in Surat Thani (Donsak or Phunpin), where a pre-booked transfer to Khao Sok will be waiting (~1.5-2 hours).
2. Combined ticket: Purchase a single "island to Khao Sok" ticket from any travel agent on the islands. This includes the ferry and minivan transfer.

What to see and do in Khao Sok

Plan for at least 2-3 days: one day for Cheow Lan Lake and another for exploring the jungle in the main park area.

1. Cheow Lan Lake — A MUST-SEE!

This is the main reason people visit Khao Sok. Lake tours are organized through operators in Khao Sok village. There are two main options:

· One-day lake tour: Includes transfer to the pier, a boat trip on the lake (you'll see the famous cliffs), a visit to a spider cave (Nam Talu Cave), swimming, lunch, and the chance to kayak or ride bamboo rafts. Cost: ~1500-2000 THB.
· Overnight lake tour: An unforgettable experience! Stay in floating bungalows (raft houses) right on the water. In the evening and morning, enjoy the incredible tranquility and beauty of the lake without the daytime crowds. The program also includes boat safaris, trekking, and wildlife observation.

2. Jungle trekking and wildlife observation

The park has many trails of varying difficulty. Be sure to hire a guide for deeper and more interesting routes! They can help you spot wildlife such as:

· Gibbons: Their morning songs are a signature sound of Khao Sok.
· Macaques, deer, wild boars.
· Hornbills and many other exotic birds.
· Rafflesia: The world's largest flower (up to 80 cm in diameter!). It parasitizes on vines and blooms briefly, so spotting one is a rare treat. Check with guides if any are blooming.

3. Caves

· Nam Talu Cave: A through cave, part of the Cheow Lan Lake tour. During the rainy season, it may be flooded, requiring you to swim through. Very atmospheric!
· Diamond Cave or Praiya Prayoon Cave: Located in the main park area, easily accessible. Features beautiful stalactites and stalagmites.

4. Waterfalls

· Ton Kloi Waterfall: A beautiful multi-tiered waterfall, accessible by a 3 km hike from the main park entrance.
· Si Phat Waterfall: Another picturesque waterfall deep in the jungle.

5. Kayaking or bamboo rafting

Rent a kayak or take a ride on a traditional bamboo raft along the Sok River, which flows through the park. This is a peaceful and scenic way to explore the surroundings from the water.

Practical tips

· When to visit?
· Best time: December to April. Dry season, less rain, comfortable temperatures.
· Avoid: May to November — rainy season. Downpours can be heavy, and some trails may be closed. However, the greenery is lush, and waterfalls are at their fullest during this time.
· Where to stay?
· Khao Sok village: Many guesthouses, bungalows, and budget hotels. Convenient for starting your trip and booking tours.
· Jungle lodges: More comfortable options surrounded by nature.
· Floating bungalows on Cheow Lan Lake: A unique experience, but conditions are usually basic (electricity in the evenings, cold water).
· What to bring?
· Comfortable trekking shoes that can handle water and mud.
· Swimsuit and towel.
· Rain protection (raincoat) and sun protection (sunscreen, hat).
· Mosquito repellent — a must!
· Waterproof case for your phone and documents.
· Flashlight (for cave visits).
