- On September 18, 1940, Field Marshal P. Phibunsongkhram, who at that time held the rank and title of Major General Luang Phibunsongkhram and was the Prime Minister, proposed to the Cabinet meeting to approve the budget to build a temple as a memorial to the democratic regime and intended to complete it in time for National Day, which was June 24, 1941. The location to be built should be near the Monument to Protect the Constitution. He reasoned that the nation and religion are inseparable, and the principles of Buddhism are consistent with democratic regimes. Therefore, it is appropriate to build a temple near the Lak Si Monument. This monument has the names of those who died during the suppression of the Boworadet Rebellion in 1933 and intended to be named "Wat Prachathipatai".
- Later, the government invited the relics of the Buddha, the branches of the Bodhi tree and the soil to be enshrined in the temple that was under construction. The temple was named Wat Phra Sri Mahathat and was dedicated as a residence on June 24, 1942.
