Engraved Epics Exhibition📍

#InsomniaInExhibition

Experience a journey across time, from Sanskrit manuscripts to woodcuts that record Asia's immortal epics, with the exhibition Engraved Epics: Early Bengal Prints of Ramayana and Mahabharata - Engraved Epics: Ramayana and Mahabharata on Early Bengal Prints, curated by Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya.

This exhibition explores the historical and artistic significance of early printed works from Bengal that tell the stories of the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Originally published in Sanskrit manuscripts, these stories later reached a wider audience through printed books and graphic arts, which influenced the arts and cultures in India and Southeast Asia, including Thailand.

In the past, the Ramayana and Mahabharata were recorded in Sanskrit manuscripts and conveyed through storytelling or cultural performances. But the woodblock printing technique in early 19th century Bengal brought these epics to life in a tangible form.

This exhibition presents exquisitely crafted prints, influenced by European and Indian art, that reflect the profound philosophies of Hinduism, including dharma, karma and sacrifice, reflecting timeless values.

In addition to the prints on display, the exhibition also features original books that retain the woodblock printing technique, as well as new prints from Kolkata made especially for this exhibition for sale.
