Wat Theplila was built during the reign of King Rama III, around 1833, by Chao Phraya Bodindecha (Sing Singhaseni) while preparing an army to conquer the Vietnamese and Khmer. During a rest stop along the banks of the Saen Saep Canal, soldiers found a standing Buddha statue in the walking posture, Sukhothai art style, approximately 1.20 meters high, which they brought to be enshrined on the banks of the canal. Later, a temple was built and the Buddha image was invited to be the principal Buddha image in the ordination hall, and the temple was named “Wat Theplila”.
