Explore the value of objects in the capitalist economy through expired rose jam with the exhibition “YUMMY ROSE Expired Edition” by artist Narapat Sak-Athornthap and curator Thiti Thirawarawit.
From “YUMMY ROSE”, a rose jam exhibition that questions the market system, monopoly, and price control through something that looks sweet and delicious, focusing on the flower production and consumption system in Thailand, especially the context of Pak Khlong Talat flower market, which reflects the problem of economic inequality for agricultural workers in 2024, to “YUMMY ROSE Expired Edition”, an exhibition that continues the issues from “YUMMY ROSE” by asking new questions: “Will the value of something expire with its expiration date?” and “Can we still exchange it in other forms?”
This exhibition is based on the concept of “Expired Edition”, which is to revisit that the value of objects is not only tied to their newness or consumption, but also changes according to social context, culture, and time. “Expired rose jam” has become a medium of symbolic exchange. It represents the vulnerability of producers, the uncertainty of agricultural workers’ lives, and the market mechanisms that directly affect them.
In the exhibition, we will see expired rose jam displayed as a product that is still being offered, only at a cheaper price, while its meaning is still full.
The exhibition reveals the mechanism of the free market that produces “value” without paying attention to the background of the creation of raw materials, reflecting the contradiction of the art world that can “add value” to expired things, and asking the audience who gives value and why.
Finally, “expired jam” may not just be a symbol of deterioration, but a mirror of the economic system that chooses to add value to things that can be controlled. It may be forgotten that some meanings never expire even for a day.
