Wat Chom Thong was built during the Ayutthaya period. His Royal Highness Prince Krommaun Jessadabodin (later King Rama III) renovated the entire temple and granted it the new name "Wat Ratchaorotaram."

This temple features a blend of Thai and Chinese architectural styles. King Rama III was fond of Chinese art and personally oversaw its construction, making it the official temple of King Rama III.

The temple's layout adheres to Chinese feng shui principles.
