One-Day Trip Review: Strolling around Talat Noi (Charoen Krung)
"Talat Noi: An Old Town Still Cool! Cool Street Art, Chic Riverside Cafes, and Charming Chinese Streets Along the Chao Phraya River"
Talat Noi is a neighborhood that seamlessly blends the heritage of old shophouses and the culture of Xiang Gong (auto parts) with modern art. It's a paradise for photographers and cafe lovers seeking a unique atmosphere.
🚶♀️ Highlights and Must-Visit Spots
1. Street Art and Orange Beetle:
• Walk into Soi Charoen Krung 22 and you'll encounter numerous murals along the alleys, making it the coolest street-style photo spot in the area!
• A must-see is the orange Volkswagen Beetle parked against an old brick wall, creating a truly vintage photo backdrop.
• Baan So Heng Tai: This 200-year-old Hokkien-style house remains beautiful and open to the public. (Some sections have a small cafe/swimming pool inside.)
2. Stylish riverside cafes and restaurants:
• Hong Sieng Kong (Hong Sieng Kong): A riverside cafe with a vintage Chinese style, nestled in an old building and a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for sipping coffee and watching the boats pass by.
• Mother Roaster: A renowned specialty coffee shop with a raw, chic atmosphere. It's known as "Mae Kua" (Mother Roaster) (because the owner is the mother who roasts the coffee herself).
• Kuay Tiew Roo: A long-established community restaurant worth a visit.
3. Traditional Ways of Life:
• Strolling through Sieng Kong, a collection of used auto parts, the birthplace of this business in Thailand, offers a glimpse into a community that still maintains its traditional way of life.
🚈 Transportation (for public transportation)
The most convenient way to get to Talad Noi is by train.
• MRT: Get off at Hua Lamphong Station (Exit 1 or 4).
• From there, it's a 10-15 minute walk (follow Google Maps to Soi Charoen Krung 22) or
• Take a motorcycle taxi. Next, get off at Soi Charoen Krung 22 for a faster ride.
• Chao Phraya Express Boat: Get off at the Marine Department Pier and walk through the alley to Talad Noi. This is another option for enjoying the river views.
📝 Additional Tips
• Best Time: We recommend going in the late afternoon (3:00 PM) to evening, as it's not too hot and allows for beautiful sunset photography.
• Day/Time: Weekdays are best for a shorter queue than on weekends. For a livelier atmosphere, go on Saturday.
• Bring Water: Bring plenty of drinking water, as this area requires a lot of walking.
