In the vibrant city of Barcelona, Spain, beyond the Gaudí architecture, the rhythms of flamenco, and breathtaking Mediterranean cuisine, lies a century-old pastry shop specializing in traditional Spanish candies and desserts: Planelles Donat, located in the heart of the city. This family-run shop, founded in 1907, has become an irreplaceable symbol of both festive and everyday sweetness in the hearts of Barcelonans.
Planelles Donat is best known for its handmade Spanish nougat (turrón). This traditional dessert, rooted in Arabic culture, is deeply ingrained in Spanish festive culinary culture. Especially during Christmas, nearly every household prepares a few pieces of turrón, symbolizing sweetness and good fortune. Planelles Donat's turrón is renowned for its handmade, high-quality, and minimal additives, making it a yearly must-buy for many locals and regular customers.
Their signature flavors include:
* Turrón de Jijona (soft and delicate almond nougat)
* Turrón de Alicante (hard nougat with whole almonds)
* Modern and innovative flavors such as chocolate, coconut, and praline
Each piece of nougat is beautifully packaged and beautifully cut, with a firm yet non-sticky texture and a sweet, natural aroma of nuts and honey that will make you a regular customer. Besides nougat, the shop also sells a variety of traditional Spanish desserts, ice cream, and pralines (garrapiñadas), ensuring a new surprise every time you visit.
The shop itself is located on the bustling pedestrian street Portal de l’Àngel, near Plaça de Catalunya. Strolling through this shop, exuding old-school charm and sweet aromas, transports you back to the streets of early 20th-century Barcelona. The neatly arranged candies and desserts in the window are not only eye-catching but can often make choosing difficult, as everything looks so tempting!
The ice cream counter at Planelles Donat is particularly noteworthy, always drawing long lines from locals in the summer. Their homemade traditional Spanish ice cream, with flavors like nougat, dulce de leche, lemon, and hazelnut, is refreshing and rich, perfect for a scorching summer day. Enjoy it lingering on the street corner outside, and savor it for a truly authentic Barcelona afternoon.
For travelers, Planelles Donat isn't just a place to buy dessert; it's a cultural experience. Most of their products are vacuum-packed, making them easy to carry and perfect as souvenirs to share back home. The prices are reasonable, the quality is excellent, and it's one of the few souvenirs that combines traditional flavor with practical value. The staff will even help with packaging!
You can also try the Spanish horchata, which tastes very similar to Taiwanese soy milk. Available in small, medium, and large sizes, I initially ordered the small, fearing it wouldn't suit my taste, but it was actually quite delicious and refreshing in the summer, so it's a no-brainer to order the large!
