Batu Caves is a cave in the Mogot terrain. It has a series of caves and cave temples in Gombak, Selangor, Malaysia. It is dedicated to Murugan, the Hindu god of war.
Batu Caves is one of the most popular Hindu holy sites outside of India and is the most popular place during the Malaysian Tamil festival, Thaipusam.
Batu Caves is also known as the 10th cave or hill of Lord Murugan because there are six other important holy sites in India and there are four here in Malaysia, the other three being the Kalumalai Temple in Ipoh, the Danimalai Temple in Penang and the Sanasimalai Temple in Malacca.
As early as 1860, settlers from China began digging guano here to fertilize their vegetable fields.
The limestone hills did not become famous until 1878, when colonial authorities including Daly and Sells and American naturalist William Hornaday documented them.
It was later promoted by the Indian Tamils as a place of worship and a temple was dedicated to Lord Murugan inside the cave. #Overseas Travel #Malaysia #Malaysia Travel #Malaysia Tourism #Religious Culture #Religion #Temple
