What to See in Beijing Without the Crowds: A One-Day Itinerary

Start: Xisi Metro Station (西四) - all attractions are within walking distance of each other. This area offers a true Beijing experience away from the tourist crowds.

1. Xisi Hutongs

Start your day with a stroll through the traditional alleys of Xisi, one of the best-preserved hutongs in central Beijing. Here you'll see traditional siheyuan (courtyards) where local families still live. Narrow alleys with gray walls and red gates create the atmosphere of old Beijing. It's especially quiet in the mornings, with locals practicing tai chi in their courtyards and merchants just getting ready for the workday.

2. Guangji Temple

An ancient Buddhist temple, founded during the Song Dynasty. Unlike the popular Lamaist Temple, there are virtually no tourists here. The temple is active: monks hold services, and locals come to pray. The architecture is classical: the entrance gate, the main hall with gilded Buddha statues, and side pavilions with arhats. The inner courtyard with ancient pine trees and incense burners is especially beautiful.

3. Church of the Savior

This Catholic church, built in the early 20th century, is an interesting example of how Christian architecture adapted to the Chinese context. Gothic elements are combined with traditional Chinese details. The church is still in use, and services are held in Chinese. This is a rare opportunity to experience Beijing's religious diversity.

4. 1901 Cafe

A cozy cafe in a traditional siheyuan courtyard, styled to resemble the early 20th century. Here you can relax and sip traditional Chinese tea or coffee. The interior recreates the atmosphere of old Beijing with antique furniture and historical photographs. An ideal place for a break mid-tour. You can also try traditional Chinese sweets and local pastries.

5. Baitasi Drugstore

A historic traditional Chinese medicine pharmacy, operating for over a century. It still sells medicinal herbs, ginseng roots, and other TCM ingredients. Rooftop cafes offer views of the hutongs.
