The Jeronimos Monastery is located in Lisbon's historic district of Belem and is one of the city's greatest historical sites.
The monastery is a masterpiece of architectural style, merging Gothic, Italian, Spanish and Flemish designs, called Manueline, after the 15th-century King Manuel I.
The monastery is located on the site of an old religious hermitage built by the explorer Henry the Navigator.
In 1497, another explorer, Vasco da Gama and his men, stayed here before setting off for India. A monastery was founded on this site in 1499 by order of Manuel I to commemorate the return of da Gama, and construction began in 1502 under the direction of Diogo Boytag, and in 1517 the Spanish architect João de Castillo took over the work, after which the French sculptor Nicolo Chanterenne added Renaissance design elements to the Jeronimos Monastery.
