Beppu – Hot Spring Paradise in Japan

Location:
Beppu is located in Ōita Prefecture, on the island of Kyushu, in southern Japan. It’s accessible by train, bus, or plane (nearest airport: Oita Airport).

What Beppu is Famous For:

1. Onsen (Hot Springs):
Beppu has the highest volume of hot spring water in Japan and ranks among the top in the world. It has over 2,000 onsen, categorized into 8 major hot spring areas known as the “Beppu Hatto.”

2. The “Hells” of Beppu (Jigoku Meguri):
These are not for bathing, but for viewing — colorful, steamy, and surreal hot springs:
• Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell): Bright blue, steaming pond.
• Chinoike Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell): Deep red water due to iron oxide.
• Tatsumaki Jigoku: A natural geyser.
• Oniishibozu Jigoku: Bubbly gray mud pools.

3. Sand Baths & Steam Baths:
You can get buried in warm volcanic sand baths, especially at places like Beppu Beach Sand Bath. There are also steam baths using natural volcanic steam (like at Kannawa Onsen).

4. Beppu Ropeway:
Take a cable car up Mount Tsurumi for panoramic views of Beppu Bay and even Mount Aso on clear days.

5. Unique Experiences:
• Try onsen-cooked food: meals steamed using natural geothermal heat.
• Stay in a traditional ryokan (Japanese inn) with private or communal hot spring baths.

Best Time to Visit:
• Fall (Oct–Nov): Perfect onsen weather and autumn foliage.
• Winter (Dec–Feb): Chilly air + hot baths = the best combo.
