A Mysterious Space Surrounded by Smoke and Steam
Beppu is known for its "Hell Tours." Among them, the most memorable was "Kamado Jigoku."
As the name suggests, the landmark is a demon statue placed atop a large hearth, making it truly impressive!
Upon entering the park, you're enveloped in billowing steam and the smell of sulfur. The colors of the ponds and springs vary from place to place, from sparkling emerald green to cloudy white boiling water. It was amazing to see such a diverse range of expressions created by the power of nature.
Kamado Jigoku is also unique in that you can actually eat boiled eggs and pudding steamed in the hot spring water. The subtle sulfur aroma creates a strangely addictive taste.
While the name "Hell" might make you feel a little intimidated, it's actually a place that's both inspiring and fascinating, and allows you to experience the depth of hot spring culture. It's a must-see spot for any Beppu visit.
