Beppu Onsen, located in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan, is a historic hot spring town. The area features numerous public baths and free foot baths of various sizes. Right outside JR Beppu Station, there's even a free hand bath (be cautious as the water temperature is extremely high, so don't dip your hand in recklessly).
Beppu is home to the Seven Hells, named after the ancient belief that the steam and boiling mud emerging from the ground resembled scenes of hell. The Seven Hells include unique hot spring areas such as "Sea Hell," "Blood Pond Hell," "White Pond Hell," and "Cooking Pot Hell," among others. Visitors can purchase a combined ticket for the "Beppu Hell Tour" to explore all of them or buy individual tickets. For instance, we only entered the "Sea Hell" and "Mountain Hell" areas, while exploring the rest of the town on foot.
The entire town is filled with hot springs, and there are free foot steamers and foot baths available for use. We highly recommend trying the foot steamer, which helps relieve foot fatigue and is incredibly soothing! If you get hungry, you can also enjoy food steamed using the hot spring's heat from roadside vendors. We even walked barefoot through the misty, warm streets, which felt like a foot therapy session in itself.
Additionally, you can take a bus from the city to the "Yumigori Observatory" located halfway up the mountain. From there, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Beppu's unique steam-filled landscape, which is especially stunning at sunset.
Recommended route: JR Beppu Station → "Sea Hell" → "Oniishi Bozu Hell" → "Cooking Pot Hell" → "Demon Mountain Hell" → "White Pond Hell" → "Kannawa Onsen" → "Blood Pond Hell" → "Tornado Hell" → Take a bus to the high viewpoint → Return to JR Beppu Station.
