The Cathedral of Saints Michael and Gudula of Brussels is one of the most representative Gothic buildings in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, and is also the cathedral of the Catholic Archdiocese of Brussels. The history of this church can be traced back to the 11th century, and the current main structure was built between the 13th and 16th centuries, taking more than three hundred years to complete! 😍
The church has a magnificent and symmetrical exterior with twin towers, somewhat similar to Notre Dame de Paris. It is an important venue for the Belgian royal family to hold weddings and national ceremonies. As you walk inside, you’ll see spectacular stained-glass windows that seem to light up the entire space when the sun shines through. The nave is tall and spacious, with stone pillars everywhere, creating a solemn and peaceful atmosphere.
Also not to be missed is the Crypte Archéologique, which dates back to the foundations of early churches and Roman ruins, making you feel like you've traveled through thousands of years. There is also an exquisite Baroque-style pulpit inside the church, with amazingly delicate carvings.
Located in the heart of the city, within walking distance of the Central Station, this cathedral is a great starting point for exploring Brussels' history and architectural culture.
