Bukhara is one of the most ancient and culturally rich cities in Central Asia. With a history spanning 2,500 years, it was a key stop along the Silk Road. Today, it is easily accessible from Tashkent - Uzbekistan’s capital. Here are my recommendations for a weekend in Bukhara:
1️⃣ Historical Sights
Experience Bukhara’s medieval architecture through its historical sites. Start with the Ark Fortress, a massive citadel that now houses several museums and city walls offering breathtaking city views. A short walk away lies the Poi Kalyan Complex, the heart of old Bukhara. This complex features the Kalyan Minaret and the beautiful Mir-i-Arab Madrasa. Other notable sites worth visiting include the Semanid Mausoleum and Chor Minor.
2️⃣ Mosques
Bukhara boasts a number of architecturally rich mosques. One of these is the Bolo Hauz Mosque, famous for its carved wooden columns and reflective pool. Another, more peaceful, spot is the Baland Mosque. Hidden in a quieter neighborhood, the mosque is decorated with stunning frescoes and intricate woodwork.
3️⃣ Bazaars
To get a taste of local life, head to the Trading Domes - a series of covered bazaars built during the 16th century. The domes now house stalls selling embroidered hats, ceramics, jewelry, and ceramics. After shopping, walk over to the Lyabi-Hauz Complex to enjoy a slow Uzbek lunch while enjoying the timeless atmosphere of the city.
🏨 Where to Stay: Boutique Hotel Minzifa is nestled in a restored building in the heart of Bukhara. Rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated. The complimentary buffet breakfast is fantastic. Staff are warm and welcoming and offer guided tours of the city.
🍚 Where to Eat:
🍖 Labi Hovuz
🍚 Mavrigi Restaurant
🫖 Silk Road Tea House
🥔 Restaurant Old Bukhara
