The Kalyan Mosque, located in the center of Bukhara, is conveniently located. First, take a car from Bukhara International Airport to the city center, then go to Lyabi Hauz, the main landmark of Bukhara. From there, walk in the direction of the Kalyan Minaret to reach the Poi Kalyan complex where the Kalyan Mosque is located. It takes about 10 minutes on foot, and you can see the mosque, Kalyan Minaret, and Miri Arab Theological Seminary.
The spacious courtyard in the center and the arches decorated with blue tiles surrounding the mosque are the essence of Islamic architecture. In particular, the symmetry created by the domes of the mosque is much more impressive than it looks in the photos. When there is no prayer, you can walk slowly and look around in a quiet atmosphere, allowing you to spend a quiet time like meditation. It is an important place of worship for Muslims, but it is also a place where travelers can experience a peaceful and pious atmosphere.
The Kalon Mosque is a representative Islamic building in Bukhara that has existed since the 12th century, and the current remaining building was restored in the 16th century. The name Kalon means ‘great’, and the mosque itself can accommodate more than 10,000 worshippers. The mosque symbolizes the Central Asian Islamic culture that developed along the ancient Silk Road, and is designated as part of the Historic City of Bukhara, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also considered an important religious and architectural heritage in the Islamic world.
