The Kalyan Mosque (more accurately pronounced Kalon, its original name meaning "large" in Persian) was built in 1514 during the reign of Ubaidullah Khan. It is the largest mosque in Baku and one of the largest in Central Asia. Its facade faces east, directly opposite the Mir-i Arab Madrasah.
This mosque is part of the Poi Kalon complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is magnificent, peaceful, and charming. I loved the spacious space reserved for women in the prayer room, demonstrating gender equality. It was heartwarming to see young girls studying, reading, or working there. It's a place filled with positive energy and a sense of peace. After your visit, you can stop by the handicraft shop for some shopping.
