Introducing Huazhou Academy

Huazhou Academy, located in the southeast corner of the outer city of Dengzhou, a historic and cultural city in Henan Province, was founded by Northern Song Dynasty politician Fan Zhongyan when he was governor of Dengzhou. The renowned poem "Yueyang Tower Inscription" was composed here. Over the past millennium, the academy has undergone repeated destruction and restoration, yet continued to operate. Qing Dynasty buildings such as Chunfeng Hall, Wanjuan Pavilion, Fan Wencheng Temple, and Jingfan Pavilion have been preserved to this day.

During his tenure as prefect of Dengzhou, Fan Zhongyan, a renowned politician in the Northern Song Dynasty, established the Chunfeng Hall, a lecture hall, a library, and dormitory within the academy, all of which remain to this day. He also created Baihuazhou to the east of the academy, rebuilt Lanxiu Pavilion, and constructed Chunfeng Pavilion. Huazhou Academy was named after Baihuazhou.

Huazhou Academy is the main structure, comprising five courtyards and four halls. The central courtyard boasts the exquisitely designed Pan Pond and Zhuangyuan Bridge, both rare in China and a distinguishing feature of the academy. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a patchwork of pavilions and terraces, complemented by a vibrant backdrop of mountains, lakes, islands, and forests. The tranquil, elegant Jiangnan garden style further enhances the graceful beauty of this millennium-old academy.
