One step through Daci Temple’s gates, and the 21st century vanished.
The clamor of Chengdu’s streets dissolved the instant I passed through Daci Temple’s towering red gates. Incense drifted upward in fragrant ribbons, weaving through the warm air. Golden rooftops shimmered like treasure, guarded by stone lions with fierce, eternal stares. Monks in saffron robes glided across the courtyards, their steps in rhythm with the low, resonant chant of sutras echoing from the Mahavira Hall. I lingered before towering Buddha statues, their serene gazes both humbling and comforting. In the temple gardens, ancient cypress trees whispered in the breeze, their roots tangled deep in centuries of history. Every sound—the soft ring of a bell, the shuffle of prayer beads—seemed to slow time itself. When I emerged back into the neon-lit chaos of the city, I felt lighter, as if I carried a pocket of the temple’s stillness in my chest, a quiet reminder of peace in the heart of motion.
