How to Explore Chengdu Giant Panda Base

The highlight of a trip to Chengdu is undoubtedly the Chengdu Giant Panda Base. Since the base is quite expansive, it’s essential to plan your visit in advance!

The entrance fee for adults is 55 yuan, while seniors aged 60 and above can enter for free. I visited with my 64-year-old mother, and she was able to enter without charge. During peak seasons, it’s recommended to purchase tickets in advance, but I was able to buy tickets directly at the ticket counter on September 4th. Since the base is so large, I suggest paying 30 yuan per person to use the sightseeing shuttle. The shuttle offers unlimited rides throughout the day.

To see the famous pandas Hua Hua and He Ye, it’s best to arrive at the base right when it opens. These two pandas are located near the South Gate, so entering through the South Gate is recommended. I mistakenly entered through the West Gate but quickly took the shuttle to the South Gate. After waiting in line for about 40 minutes, I finally got to see Hua Hua and He Ye. He Ye was sleeping soundly, while Hua Hua was wandering around, looking absolutely adorable.

I was able to see pandas numbered 1 through 6 and even observed them eating bamboo shoots. At one of the rest stops, I bought a Hua Hua-shaped ice cream for 25 yuan—it was both visually appealing and delicious!

Additionally, the Bamboo Shoot Tower is free to access and offers a great view of the panda base and its surroundings.

If you’re visiting Chengdu, make sure to explore the Chengdu Giant Panda Base 🐼🇨🇳
