Wat Umong, located on Suthep Road in Mueang District, was built during the reign of King Mangrai around 1296 CE for the forest dwellers. Later, King Kuena built a tunnel for the Venerable Maha Thera Chan to use as a vipassana meditation retreat. The tunnel features an interior wall with multiple passageways.
The tunnel once contained murals, believed to have been painted between 1357 and 1457 CE. Originally, the murals filled every room, mostly depicting lotus flowers, botanic flowers, and various birds such as peacocks, herons, parrots, and ducks.
Above the tunnel is an ancient Lanna-style chedi.
Archaeologists believe it was built around the beginning of the 20th Buddhist century. It is a bell-shaped chedi with approximately three circular tiers resembling stacked lotus petals, topped with a spire. In front of the tunnel is a carved stone Buddha head from the Phayao style, dating from 1457 to 1557 CE.
The temple grounds are a Buddhist garden, shaded by a variety of trees. It's a forest park suitable for meditation. Behind it is a forest park and zoo, which is a sanctuary where you can walk around and is also a good place for bird watching.
