Wat Chedi Luang Worawihan 🛕
🕰 One of the must-see temples in Chiang Mai, it is both significant and ancient. The temple was built during the reign of King Saen Mueang Ma (the seventh king of the Mangrai Dynasty) around 1385 CE.
Later, King Tilokarat enlarged the chedi, making it the largest chedi in Lanna.
It originally housed the Emerald Buddha (now located at Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram in Bangkok).
In 1545 CE, a major earthquake caused the chedi's top to collapse.
🏯 Highlights within the temple:
Chedi Luang: A large chedi, originally approximately 80 meters high, now approximately 60 meters tall.
Vihara Luang: A large wooden vihara with beautiful Lanna designs.
Sao Inthakin (Chiang Mai City Pillar): Located within the temple grounds, it is highly revered by Chiang Mai residents. There is a ceremony to worship the Inthakin pillar. Held annually in May.
🕓 Opening Hours:
Open daily: 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Free admission (but donations are welcome).
📍 Location:
Phra Pok Klao Road, Phra Singh Subdistrict, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai Province, approximately 500 meters from Tha Phae Gate (easy walking distance).
